can anyone give a recipe for a side dish that can be made in under 1-2 hours by a bunch of 14-15 year olds?
our group is entering a cookfest competition in our school. and the category for our group is side dishes… we need to make a side dish, which is cheap and doesnt need ovens or freezing.. one that could be made with a portable gas stove or electric stove, and doesnt need expensive ingredients… and preferrably vegetables, and could be made in under 1-2 hours..

Make a simple coleslaw, grate the cabbage, and carrots.. add mayo, sugar, vinegar and salt and pepper.. quick and easy and no cooking.
Or a bean salad.. they are really easy using several types of beans with a sweet, oil and vinegar dressing.
macorroni and cheese please or if you want something a little more suficticated try fried eggplant or some type of dressing (rice or eggplant) or try doin a dish of pan grilled vegitables
you should make cheese fries…get some frozen fries from the grocery store and some cheese sauce.U first should bake the fries and five minutes before you take them out put the cheese sauce in a pan with a little bit of water and stir it u untill it is melted and hot. Then take the fries out and plate them, then pour the sauce over them or you could put it in a bowl and serve it……..if u like u could also add bacon to the cheese sauce.

Butterbeans with bacon and onion…. You can’t lose with bacon, and it’s beans so it still looks nominally healthy.

Try this one…..slice up a French loaf, and drizzle over a little olive oil onto the slices, grill the slices till lightly toasted. set aside.Chop an onion into cubes (red or white onion) chop tomatoes into cubes if you can get a few cherry tomatoes as well and leave them whole… add a little crushed garlic or a pinch of garlic powder, a little black pepper and a little pinch or salt and a little squeeze of lemon juice (optional). Into a frying pan (low heat) add a blob of butter and a little olive oil, once butter is melted add the chopped ingredients and on a low heat cook until soft and onions are see thru! Table spoon the mixture onto the toasted bread slices, and grate a little paramesan cheese on top!! Delicious!! can be served with any pasta dish or fish dish.
potatoe salad…..baked beans……develed eggs……..fresh seasoned steamed veggies……homemade creamed corn. a salad with different veggies in it.
Just boil some new potatoes, cut them into chunks, place a few pats of butter on top, sprinkle with cheese and chives and then cover with plastic wrap to melt the cheese. Just reheat when ready to serve. (They keep nicely!)
